South Korea is supported militarily by the United States in an uneasy peace with its northern neighbor. Because of the constant military threat from North Korea, South Korea maintains a fairly large and well-equipped air force, numbering 33,000 men and 450 combat aircraft. Using mostly Vietnam-era aircraft of U.S. manufacture, an update program introducing the F-16 is currently underway.
